What You Can Do

Gold Prospecting: Hands and pans only – gold pans, hand tools, and sluice boxes allowed. No powered equipment (highbankers, dredges, or motors) per USFS casual use rules.

Fishing: Willow Creek is famous for cutbow trout – world-class fly fishing. (Colorado fishing license required)

Camping: Dispersed camping nearby – tents, campers, RVs welcome (no hookups). Bring your own grill, food, and water. Dogs welcome, must be under control.

Rules & Conduct

  • Restore the creek before leaving: fill all holes, dismantle any dams or alterations.

  • Pack out all trash – Leave No Trace.

  • No campfires at any time – per law.

  • Attendance by invitation only – you must have a dated, signed permit from the claim owner for the specific event day(s).

Permit Restrictions

Per USFS and Colorado law, the following require prior authorization and are not permitted at this event:

  • Notice of Intent (NOI) – for activity beyond casual use

  • Plan of Operations (PoO) – for significant surface disturbance

  • State DRMS permits – for large-scale placer operations

This event is strictly low-impact to protect the land.

Altitude Warning

  • This claim sits at 8,500 ft elevation. Visitors not acclimated may experience altitude sickness.

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Limit alcohol

  • Take breaks and pace yourself

Waiver Requirement

✅ All attendees must complete the official KGP GRAND PLACER Waiver before arrival.

  • Waivers are issued by the claim owner with fixed event dates.

  • Waivers are not valid on any other dates.

  • After submission, your permit will be emailed within 24 hours. Please print or save a screenshot and keep it with you on the claim.
